Laguna lies on the southern shores of Laguna de Bay,
the largest lake in the Philippines. On the southern border of the province are
Mount Makiling and Mount Banáhaw, both are long dormant volcanoes, but still
sources of geothermal energy. Mount Makiling is popular for the numerous hot
spring resorts that are found on its slopes. Pagsanjan Falls is a popular
waterfall that tumbles down a deep gorge in the hills.
The eastern portion of Laguna straddles the
southernmost portions of the Sierra Madre mountain range.
The province is relatively dry from November to
April and wet during the rest of the year for a small portion near the southern
boundary. The other parts: west of Santa Cruz municipality, experience a dry
season from November to April and rainy season during the rest of the year. The
eastern and southern most portions do not have distinct season, with rainfall
more evenly distributed throughout the year.
Really, Laguna is one of the best places in the Philippines.
The weather is favorable for breeding and raising fighting cocks, that’s why
many gamefowl farms are built here. Certified cockers usually choose to live
nearby while building farms for their chickens. The atmosphere is refreshing
although this is not a mountainous area compared to Bacolod City in Negros
province.
In Luzon area, Laguna gamefowl farms are very
accessible to buyers and don’t need to travel in a far flung area like Visayas
and Mindanao just to buy select breeding materials. Laguna chicken breeds are
noted and respected by other breeders as one of the best nowadays.
In Laguna, you can find the meticuluous, scientific
and respected breeders like Baby Canillas of Spanichi Gamefarm; Boy Tanyag
who’s the 2009 Bakbakan winner; Sonny Lagon who is also a famous breeder and
became a World Slasher Cup champion in 2016; Pol Estrellado of PE Gamefarm and many more. You don’t need to go to Bacolod
just to buy chickens because in Laguna, you can look for good chickens.
The good thing also about Laguna, the associations
here are very active like Laguna Gamefowl Breeders Association (LGBA) and Gamefowl
Breeders of Laguna, Inc. (GBLAG). There are many cockpits around the province;
like in San Pablo, they have three cockpits namely Lucky Sports Complex,
Fantastic Cockpit Area and San Pablo Cockpit Arena. More and more gamefowl
enthusiasts are really enjoying and prefer Laguna for derby outside Manila and
other provinces like Batangas, Cavite and Quezon province.
Usually, major derbies are conducting in Metro
Manila like NCA, World Slasher Cup, etc. unless Laguna cockers would join in
Araw ng Davao and Candelaria International Derby.
